Protection of Žitný Ostrov’s drinking water –
a highest public interest
The project “Protection of Žitný Ostrov’s drinking water – a highest public interest” is supported by the ACF – Slovakia programme under the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021. The programme is administered by the Ekopolis Foundation in partnership with the Open Society Foundation Bratislava and the Carpathian Foundation.
Žitný Ostrov can claim to be the largest drinking-water reservoir in Slovakia and one of the largest in Europe. Its rich water resources, together with a favourable climate and fertile soil, make it a fundamental agricultural region. Water from this reservoir is of excellent quality, which makes it a reliable source of drinking water, yet farming and the pesticides used are a serious threat to its quality and to its importance as a drinking-water store.
The project set out to defend Žitný Ostrov’s water sources against the threat from farming and human activity, which endangers its role as a key supplier of drinking water. Its aim was to raise residents’ awareness of water protection and of pollution risks, especially pesticides. Community engagement was essential to a stronger relationship with water sources.
The project also prioritised policies for monitoring pesticides, which are essential to protecting water quality and long-term sustainability. In essence it defended Žitný Ostrov’s water sources through information, community engagement and policy.
The project raised awareness among Žitný Ostrov residents of why water must be protected and of the risks of pollution. Educational work, including programmes adapted for schools and community events, increased knowledge and understanding of how water is managed.
Community activities strengthened residents’ sense of responsibility for local water sources and helped them take practical steps to protect this irreplaceable asset. Better communication and cooperation with water companies, local governments and state institutions led to more effective management, with a positive effect on water quality and sustainability.
In 2024 the project Protection of Žitný Ostrov’s drinking water received the nationwide ATLAS environmental award of the VÚB Foundation in the Awareness category.
